Review: iSoftwareTV has a very high quality, professional feel to it, plus several smart features the other softwares lack. For example, pop-up channel clues… If you move your mouse over the channel name it gives you a pop-up text description of the channel. This is a huge time saver because the channel names don’t always make it obvious what they’re about. There is also a search tool that allows you to find specific content quickly and avoid channel surfing. You can browse channels by country, language, or category. iSoftwareTV also performs automatic channel updates when channels change or go off the air. So every channel in the list actually works. The other softwares all come with quite a few “dead” channels because they never get deleted from the menu.

The interface consists of a silver video player surrounded by several controls, menus and options. To switch between full-screen and mini-mode you just double click the video feed.

Review: If you don’t mind spending quite a bit more money ($99.95) Satellite TV for PC 2009 Titanium Edition comes with 4,000 channels, which is 1,000 more than my #1 choice. However, I feel like the extra channels included here are mostly “fluff” and don’t add very much true value. They’re low budget, foreign channels, or channels that are off the air most of the time. So it’s hard to justify spending $99.95 just to get those additional channels when iSoftwareTV is such a fantastic product for 1/3 the price. I also noticed that when changing channels I often times had to wait 10 to 20 seconds for the channel to load. That feels like an eternity if you’re looking for something to watch. With iSoftwareTV the channels appear on screen almost instantly – within 5 seconds tops.

I was really looking forward to trying this software because their website looks fantastic. Many people who don’t know any better will choose this software simply based on how professional their website looks. However, I was extremely disappointed because there are only 120 English/American channels. My #1 and #2 choices both have over 1,500 English/American channels. If you speak several languages SatelliteDirect may be worth your while, but if you only speak English (like me) you’re going to have a very limited selection of entertainment. Some of the foreign channels do have subtitles, but not many… maybe 20%. On the positive side: The picture quality is just as good as the others and it’s still very reasonably priced for what you get. Hopefully in the future they’ll include MUCH more content designed for English speaking users.

Review: Satellite TV For PC 2009 Elite Edition is made by the same company as my #2 choice, and is very similar. The main difference is that it comes with 1,000 less stations and is half the price; $49.95. Although this is a decent internet television product, and I would normally recommend it, iSoftwareTV still has a more refined feel, more features, plus it’s less expensive. Something else worth mentioning: When I installed Satellite TV For PC 2009 Elite Edition, my computer’s antivirus software popped up and warned me that it might have malicious spyware built into it. It seemed like this was a false alarm because I allowed the installation and I did not have any noticeable problems, but you never know. Even if it was a false alarm, you’d think that a reputable software developer would have fixed whatever was causing it.

Final Summary:
If you want to watch TV online it’s a no-brainer to get iSoftwareTV. It looks great, works great, sets up in 2 minutes, and does it all for only $34.95… I still can’t believe how much entertainment it provides for less than one month of cable.

Satellite TV for PC 2009 Titanium Edition comes with an extra 1,000 channels. But it costs $99.95 and I don’t personally feel like it’s worth the price difference . If money is no object it may be worth $99.95, otherwise go with iSoftwareTV.

SatelliteDirect put a lot of energy into creating a nice website, but didn’t focus on what matters most – their audience. The software only contains 120 English/American channels. If you’re interested in watching foreign channels with subtitles it may be a good choice for you.

I’ve tried at least four other less popular TV softwares and none of them are worth writing reviews on. They either don’t get updated, or never worked well to begin with.

Overall, TV-to-PC software offers an affordable, convenient solution if you want to watch TV on your computer. It will be interesting to see what happens in the future when some of the larger development companies release full-blown Internet television packages, which will probably include 100% high definition programming and a highly interactive TV/shopping experience.

In a word… Yes. When you take into consideration the various methods of watching live TV, it is obvious that Internet television products and services, such as satellite TV software, which enables you to watch TV online, will soon lead the pack in terms of quality, affordability, and options. Tech heads, media junkies, movie goers and the likes are already gearing up for the next generation of young geniuses to develop the next line of Internet television solutions. And for good reasons… First of all it is likely that in the very near future Internet TV will provide purely high definition programming. HD is already becoming the new standard as LCD and plasma TV prices fall within reach of the average consumer. And about half the stations available are already in high def. Another thing that will factor into this is how we connect to the Internet. Currently, most people use cable or DSL, but fiber optic infrastructures are planned, which will greatly increase bandwidth, providing extremely fast download speeds, ideal for streaming live HD Internet television. It’s likely that within a few years resolutions below 1920 x 1080 will be obsolete.

With live news and live sports comes live shopping… If you watch TV online, in front of your computer or laptop, the user experience can be highly interactive. The programs available now could already be considered state of the art, allowing you to stream thousands of channels which are being broadcast from various countries all over the globe right to your home computer or laptop. And because the stations are all free-to-air stations you can do this legally without paying for a subscription or entertainment package. It’s easy to see why these services, combined with the ability to watch TV online, are the future of television.

In my opinion, the greatest thing about being able to watch TV online is that it allows you to stay in tune with the media, information, entertainment, and programming you’ve grown accustomed to being plugged into, while simultaneously sitting at your computer and using it for productive tasks, even fairly intensive ones. For example I can be sitting in my reclining sofa chair with my laptop, doing my year end bookkeeping (using QuickBooks) which is normally quite grueling, and all the while I’m watching live NFL football games, or live news, in a small window on my desktop. Then when commercials come on I just minimize the TV window completely, or hit the mute button until the live soccer game I was “watching” comes back on. If the experience were comparable to watching cable TV wouldn’t you like to save the cost of your subscription? Why not just completely forget about using the normal TV and instead watch TV online all the time?
